Are Some of Us Going Back In Time?

Note: I don't know anything about this book .
I used the cover to catch your attention. Sneaky me.

Originally, I was just going to share a great link that gave all the details about the iPhone parody I posted yesterday.

But, being me, I got sidetracked by other cool stuff on the blog Waking Up Now.

Then I saw this and felt outraged.

So I did some searching and found this, which gives some links to take action. WARNING: It automatically launches a loud sound clip, so you might want to turn off your sound before you click.

When I look at this man, I think how far we've come.

I've blogged about this issue before. I thought Spencer Tracy's speech settled the matter.

When I read the statement by Keith Blackwell, the ignorant justice of the peace from Louisiana,
There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage. I think those children suffer and I won’t help put them through it…I’m not a racist. I just don’t believe in mixing the races that way. I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom.
I wondered if he has a special bathroom for those friends.

I also wonder if he's unaware of the parentage of his President.

Or if he does know and is angry about it.

Despicable.

"Despicable" just about covers it.

And here I was hoping this wasn't a one step forward, two steps back, world.

I can't believe I heard about an important outrage like this before reading it on your blog! Here is the piece I saw a few days ago; hope you're as encouraged by this attitude among the younger generation as I am: http://tinyurl.com/yguf6d7 .

Despicable: I so agree.
Have you heard anything about our big BNP stink? Simon and I stayed up late to watch him make a fool of himself on Question Time last night.

I live in the DEEEP south and my husband used to rent an office downtown. He and his fellow artists decided to go poking about in the basement where they found a whites only water fountain and a colored fountain too. I can't even believe these things are around and should be put into a museum because my kids wouldn't even believe that kind of thing happened.

I suppose it is a sign of the times that this story made it to the national news... because you know judges with this attitude used to be very common. Still, it's hard to contemplate that this judge feels justified in promoting his beliefs at this stage in history.

Growing up in a loving nurturing home has nothing to do with skin color or sexual orientation. It's about the attitude and care the parents give their children.

Some are so close minded. Change comes so slow at times. I do remember when a mixed marriage was a non-catholic and a catholic.

Of all the various issues I don't understand why some are so opposed to changes that no effect on their lives.

Here's a clip that was mentioned in the Chicago Trib. This 80 something veteran makes a very good point.

Welcome to my childhood, growing up in Louisiana.

I had to leave "Lou" a response comment. What an ass .. asking "what's the big deal?" and further stating that the judge is entitled to his opinion. What happens if next week if the judge's opinion is that child abuse is ok?

Barry - I think the US took a HUGE step forward elected Obama, but it's clear that there are still a lot of backward people in power. In some ways, it's better that this is so overt, because people can clearly identify and confront it. What disturbs me is the more subtle prejudice, the kind where, when one tries to point it out, the prejudiced person denies it and pretends their negativity is based on something else.

Kathy - Clearly, I'm slipping! :) Thanks for the link - as more and more people have interracial relationships and children, it becomes a nonissue, I think. But it will still take decades.

Bee - BNP was mentioned elsewhere, but I failed to read about it. Just did. Here's my question to you: Obviously, there was a huge controversy over the BBC decision to give Griffin a place to air his views. Do you think they should have included him? Many in England say that it's dangerous to grant him legitimacy. It reminds me of the Obama position about Fox News. When we treat an entity that is so extremely biased as a part of the normal system, we risk extremism from the electorate. Then again, there's that pesky free speech thing poking me in the arm, demanding to be heard.

Stacie - it should be put in a museum. And maybe someone should check Blackwell's bathroom too.

phD - Remember, it's Louisiana. Adjust your calendar accordingly...

lisleman - that clip from Maine was really moving. Thanks for sharing the link.

Shana - still, you turned out okay. So Louisiana isn't completely bad.

a tired wife - you're so right! Or the judge who told a battered wife in eastern Oregon a few years ago "If you'd get dinner on the table quickly, maybe you wouldn't get hit." Is he entitled to his opinion too? I think not.
